Obituary for Bessie O'Leary

Bessie O'Leary
JAMA BESSIE SHEARER O’LEARY

Port Lavaca – Jama Bessie Shearer O’Leary was born February 3, 1921 to James and Daisy Pearl McMullin Skaggs in Eldorado, Oklahoma. She was raised in Alvord, Texas. She moved to Port Lavaca in 1949 and was an active person in the community. She departed this life for her heavenly home on December 1, 2017 in Round Rock, Texas.

Bessie joined the VFW Auxiliary in 1962. She served as President of the local chapter and was District President in 1969 & 1970, and was a life member. She worked for fifteen years with the local American Cancer Society. In 1976 Bessie was named Woman of the year by the Pilot Club.

Bessie was Director of Volunteers at the local hospital from 1970 – 1989, a job she dearly loved. She is remembered by the Candy Stripers at MMC from years ago. After retirement, she continued to volunteer until 2005.

She joined the First Presbyterian Church in 1955 and was an active member serving as elder, deacon, Sunday School teacher and Co-treasurer. Bessie married Bud O’Leary Oct. 29, 1988. They flew to Ireland and the Holy Land.

Bessie leaves behind 5 generations. They are 2 daughters Dealma Burkholder of Victoria, and Doretha (Lee) Steen of Round Rock; 2 grandchildren James (Michelle) Rapp of Victoria, Rhonda (Chris) Hawes of Houston; 3 great grandchildren DeAnne, Amber and Faith; 2 great great grandchildren Anastasia and AJ; step-Son Tim (Margaret) O’Leary of Fallbrook, CA and Tim’s son Patrick; 2 step grandsons Joshua and wife Erika and Sean and wife Nateshia of Bastrop. She is preceded in death by her husband Bud, late husband Kenneth Shearer, her parents, sister Liz Caldwell, half-sisters and half-brothers, granddaughter Rhoda Burkholder Watley; husband R.W., great-grandson Cody, two step-daughters Kathy Joslin and Peggy O’Leary.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Grace Funeral Chapel, Port Lavaca.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Box 62, Port Lavaca or a charity of their choice.

It was Bessie’s prayer that along her journey in this life she could show some love and kindness to others. The people left behind know that her prayers were answered.

Condolences and memories can be shared at www.gracefuneralhome.net. Services are under the direction and personal care of Grace Funeral Home.
