Willie Lee Simmons died on January 2, 2018 at age 93. He was born in Richards, Texas, on November 2, 1924, to Benjamin and Minnie Stovall Simmons.
Willie began his career as a machinist, working at Kelly AFB in San Antonio. Willie served in the U.S. Army during World War II in military hospitals. After being discharged from the Army, Willie returned to his work as a machinist at Kelly AFB. He married Helen James in 1947, and together they had 3 sons. In 1966, he married Betty Bodenhamer, and expanded his family to include her 3 children, and with Betty he had another son.
In 1973, he retired and moved to Weesatche to live by his brothers, Sam and Edward. He started Simmons Electric, and worked well into his 80s. He was always willing to answer the call of “Willie, I don’t have any water.”
Willie was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Edward, Ezra, and Sam; his sisters Minnie Mae McNeill, (Mavis) Aline Wilson, and Dorothy Riley; and his step-daughter Mary Crouch.
He is survived by his wife Betty, his sons Kenneth (Cindy), Richard (Lynn), Donald (Locksley), and Charles (Connie), step-son Calvin Bodenhamer (Glenda), step-daughter Pamela Hartman, sister (Velma) Laverne Carter, nephews Waylan (Sarah) and Warren (Elaine) Aaron (Frankie) and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Special thanks to Waylon Simmons and Norma Simmons, who cared for him faithfully during his final illness.
Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Friday, January 5th at Grace Funeral Home – Goliad (214 N. Market St.). Graveside services will be Saturday, January 6th at 1:00 pm at Pool Cemetery in Richards, TX.
