Willie began his career as a machinist, working at Kelly AFB in San Antonio. Willie served in the U.S. Army during World War II in military hospitals. After being discharged from the Army, Willie returned to his work as a machinist at Kelly AFB. He married Helen James in 1947, and together they had 3 sons.
