Billy Hobbs Dowden, 88, passed away on July 2, 2018. He was born December 10, 1929 in Jacksonville, Texas to the late Christopher A. and Nannie Dowden. He grew up in the oil patch and lived in several Humble Oil & Refining company camps around East and South Texas. He graduated from Kingsville High School in 1947. Then attended Texas A&M College Station and graduated with a B.A. in Business from Texas A&I Kingsville. He was married to Joan Mitchell of Pleasanton, Texas for 49 years.
He Served in the US Navy from 1952-1954 during the Korean War. He began his successful 40-year career with Dresser Magcobar, which later became M.I. Drilling Fluids, in Alice Texas. Over the years, his career transferred him and his family to McAllen, Victoria, Corpus Christi and Houston, TX and then finally to New Orleans, LA., where he retired in 1993. In 2005, he moved back to Victoria, TX to be closer to family. Billy was an expert in world history, enjoyed traveling, attending symphonies and watching Texas A&M football games. In addition, he enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing from the Gulf Coast of Texas to the Bayous of Louisiana, but he mostly enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years where he enjoyed spending time with friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Christopher A. and Nannie Dowden, his brother Curtis and his wife, Joan Mitchell Dowden.
He is survived by his children Sarah Dowden (Seth Williams) of Lafayette, LA, Chris Dowden (Dawn) of Victoria, TX and Julie Dowden of Victoria, TX. Grandchildren: Jennifer Geisler (Jered) of The Woodlands, TX, Laura Finke, of Lafayette, LA, Natalie Roddy (David) of Portland, TX, Bryan Dowden (Tiffany Hall) of Victoria, TX and Great Grandchildren: Kealie, Riley, Tyler, Taylor, Seth and Emma. His family and friends will miss his smile and humor. He loved deeply and was deeply loved in return.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Grace Memorial Chapel, 8819 US Hwy 87 North, Victoria, TX 77904. Chapel services will be on Saturday, July 7, 2018 beginning at 10:30am at Grace Memorial Chapel with Pastor Mike Hurt, officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
