Obituary for Sandra Seekamp (Mathews)

Sandra Seekamp (Mathews)
Our beloved mother, Sandra (Sandy) Kay Seekamp, went to be with the Lord September 29, 2018.

Sandra was born, September 17, 1947 in Kingsville, Texas to Rex and Billie Mathews. She grew up and worked in Kingsville, but later moved to the Austin area. A truly beautiful person inside and out, at the age of 4, she was crowned “Little Miss Padre Island” and at 16, crowned “Miss Kleberg County”. A sharp wit and eager learner, she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s of Education degree from Texas A&I University in only three years. She was a government and economics teacher at H.M. King High School and Del Valle High School before retiring. While teaching, she was awarded on two occasions the National Endowment for the Humanities grant.

We will never forget her contagious laughter that made everyone around her join in. Her loving personality and kindness was freely shared with all those who crossed her path. To know Sandy was to know her as a steadfast supporter and activist for the Democratic Party, a lover of crossword puzzles and Jeopardy, and a friend to those in need. She once served as a delegate to the Texas State Democratic convention. While living in Austin, Sandy become an advocate for individuals with specials needs, and served on the Capital Metro Special Transportation board. After Sandy’s car accident 22 years ago, she taught us all life lessons in tenacity, and never giving up, no matter what circumstances life brings your way.

Sandy loved the Lord, her country, friends, and family fiercely. She leaves a legacy of love for those she leaves behind. Sandy is survived by her son, Steve Seekamp and grandchildren, Sydney, Matthew and Blake; daughter, Kay Lynn Kuebel, spouse Larry and grandchildren Mark, Carlie and Colten; and daughter Joy Nell Jaynes, spouse, Chris and grandchildren Shaelyn, Treagen, Trael and Trustley. She is also survived by her loving brother and sister, Tommy Mathews, spouse Bob Hergenroeder and Becky Mathews Rainbolt, spouse Gerald, and nephew Michael.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, October 6th at 2:00 p.m. at the Wyatt’s Lakehouse on Lake Austin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the State or National Democratic Party in Sandy’s name. Graveside service at Chamberlain Cemetery in Kingsville, Texas, date to be determined.
